Founding Years

Founded in 1959, The National School of Drama was established under the Sangeet Natak Akademi, which had Jawaharlal Nehru as its president. Under the direction (1962–77) of Ebrahim Alkazi, the school emerged as India’s premier theatre-training institute. This illustrious institution was established to create a reservoir of actors and theatre practitioners who would not only entertain but also challenge and provoke thought. Initially situated at Nizamuddin West, it was known as the ‘National School of Drama and Asian Theatre Institute,’ and its first batch graduated in 1961.

During Ebrahim Alkazi’s visionary tenure as the director of the institution from 1962 to 1977, NSD underwent a transformative evolution. He had the students dig and build platforms for a theater in the backyard of a rented house in Kailash Colony, where NSD had moved at the time. Later, when the school relocated to its present location, he left an enduring legacy by designing two theaters for NSD, including a 200-seat studio theater and the open-air Meghdoot theater, nestled under the shade of a majestic banyan tree. The NSD story continued to unfold as it relocated in May 1975 to its present premises at Bahawalpur House, once the residence of Bahawalpur, a former princely state. This new home became the fertile ground where generations of actors and theater professionals honed their craft.
